Came across this nice story which describes how people follow/ believe without any reasoning behind it.

"Put eight monkeys in a room. In the middle of the room is a ladder, leadingto a bunch of bananas hanging from a hook on the ceiling. Each time a monkeytries to climb the ladder, all the other monkeys are sprayed with ice water,which makes them miserable.Soon enough, whenever a monkey attempts to climb the ladder, all of theother monkeys, not wanting to be sprayed, set upon him and beat him up.Soon, none of the eight monkeys ever attempts to climb the ladder. One ofthe original monkeys is then removed, and a new monkey is put in the room.Seeing the bananas and the ladder, he wonders why none of the other monkeysare doing the obvious, but, undaunted, he immediately begins to climb theladder. All the other monkeys fall upon him and beat him silly. He has noidea why. However, he no longer attempts to climb the ladder.A second original monkey is removed and replaced. The newcomer againattempts to climb the ladder, but all the other monkeys hammer the crap outof him. This includes the previous new monkey, who, grateful that he's noton the receiving end this time, participates in the beating because all theother monkeys are doing it. However, he has no idea why he's attacking thenew monkey.One by one, all the original monkeys are replaced. Eight new monkeys are nowin the room. None of them have ever been sprayed by ice water. None of themattempt to climb the ladder. All of them will enthusiastically beat up anynew monkey who tries, without having any idea why."

கவிதை: குழப்பம்

அப்துல் ரகுமான்தனமாய் ஒரு கவிதை. **********************எனக்கு குழப்பமாய் இருக்கிறது********************** பித்தன் தனியே அமர்ந்து வானைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தான். "என்ன செய்கிறாய்?", என்று கேட்டேன். "குழம்பிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்", என்றான். அவன் மேலும் சொன்னான். "நான் ஏற்கெனவே குழம்பி இருந்தேனா? அல்லது இப்பொழுதுதான் குழம்புகிறேனா? நான் குழம்பித்தான் இருக்கிறேனா? அல்லது தெளிவாய்த்தான் இருக்கிறேனா? இதுவே குழப்பமாய் இருக்கிறது? அப்படியென்றால் நான் குழம்பியிருக்கிறேன். இந்த குழப்பம் தெளிவு வந்ததனாலா? அல்லது தெளிவுதான் இப்பொழுது குழப்பம் ஆகிவிட்டதா? மொத்தத்தில் நான் குழம்பியிருக்கிறேன் என்று எனக்குத் தெளிவாய்த் தெரிகிறது. அப்படியென்றால் நான் தெளிவாய் இருக்கிறேன். அதெப்படி? தெளிவும் குழப்பமும் சேர்ந்து வருமா? அதாவது தெளிவுதான் குழப்பமா? இல்லை குழப்பம்தான் தெளிவா? தெளிவென்றால் என்ன? குழப்பமென்றால் என்ன? இப்பொழுது தெளிவாகி விட்டது. தெளிவாக இருப்பதுதான் குழம்பும் குழம்புவதுதான் தெளியும். குழப்ப வைப்பது தெளிவு தெளிய வைப்பது குழப்பம். இப்படி இன்னும் எத்தனை குழப்பங்கள் என்னைக் குழப்பக் காத்திருக்கின்றனவோ? எனக்கு இன்னும் குழப்பமாகவே இருக்கிறது. இருந்தாலும் குழப்பமில்லாமல் தத்துவங்களும், விஞ்ஞானமும் இல்லை. ஆப்பிள் ஏன் கீழே விழுந்ததென்று குழம்பாவிடில் புவிஈர்ப்பின் அவசியம் தெரிந்திருக்காது. பறவைகள் மட்டுமேன் பறக்கின்றனவென்று குழம்பாவிடில் விமானத்தின் கண்டுபிடிப்பு நிகழ்ந்திருக்காது. ஆனால் இன்று நீங்கள் குழம்புவதை நிறுத்தி விட்டீர்கள். தெளிவு என்னும் அறியாமையில் மூழ்கி விட்டீர்கள். எல்லாவற்றையும் அப்படியே ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள ஆரம்பித்து விட்டீர்கள்.அல்லது கண்மூடித்தன்மாய் எதிர்க்கத் தொடங்கி விட்டீர்கள். அதனால் குட்டையைப்போல் ஒரே இடத்தில் தேங்க ஆரம்பித்து விட்டீர்கள். ஆதலால் எல்லோரும் குழம்பிக் கொண்டே இருங்கள். நதி போல் என்றும் பயணித்துக் கொண்டே இருங்கள்." நன்றி : "மரத்தடி"  ஆனந்த் பழனிசாமி. பா.நந்தன்

"நேற்று என் தந்தை தோண்டினார்

நீரும், எண்ணெயும் தந்தது இப்பூமி

இன்று நான் தோண்டுகிறேன்

அங்கங்கே வெடிகுண்டுகளும் கிடைக்கின்றன

நாளை என் மகன் தோண்டினால்

எங்கும் எலும்புக்கூடுகள்தான் இருக்குமோ?"

என் பாடல் பெட்டகத்திலிருந்து அண்மையில் கேட்க நேரிட்ட இப் பாரதியார் பாடல், என்னை மிகவும் பாதித்த பாடல்களில் ஒன்று.





நல்லதோர் வீணை செய்தே - அதை

நலங்கெடப் புழுதியி லெறிவ துண்டோ?

சொல்லடி சிவசக்தி! - எனைச்

சுடர்மிகு மறிவுடன் படைத்து விட்டாய்,

வல்லமை தாராயோ, - இந்த

மாநிலம் பயனுற வாழ்வதற்கே?

சொல்லடி, சிவசக்தி! - நிலச்

சுமையென வாழ்ந்திடப் புரிகுவையோ?



விசையுறு பந்தினைப்போல் - உள்ளம்

வேண்டிய படிசெலும் உடல்கேட்டேன்,

நசையறு மனங்கேட்டேன், - நித்தம்

நவமெனச் சுடர்தரும் உயிர்கேட்டேன்,

- பொய்யெனப் பெய்யும் மழை (வைரமுத்து)

நம்பிக்கையே நல்லது..எறும்புக்கும் வாழ்க்கை உள்ளது..

எத்தனை சத்தான வரிகள். சிகரம் படத்தில் நடிகர் சார்ளி படுவதாக அமையும் இப்பாடல் வரிகள் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த வரிகள். இதுவும் என் அபிமான கவிஞர் வைரமுத்துவின் வரிகள்தான். இந்தப்பாடலின் இறுதி வரிகளில் உலகில் எதை நீ இழந்தலும் இயற்கை உன்னை வெறுப்பதிலை. அது வேறுபாடு காட்டுவதில்லை என்ற வரிகள் நிச்சயம் நிரந்தரமானவை.



சந்தர்ப்பம்: அவன் காத்திருந்தான். என்றேனும் ஒரு நாள் பாடகனாகிவிட முடியும் என்ற நகர்த்த முடியாத நம்பிக்கையிலிருந்த்தான். வந்தது வாய்ப்பு.ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீர் ஒலிபெருக்கியில் தெறிக்க உருகிப்பாடுகிறான். காத்திரு மூங்கிலே காத்திரு! என்றேனும் ஒருநாள் உன்னை வண்டு துளைக்கும். நீ புல்லாங்குழலாவாய். பொறுத்திரு.

What is love? What is Marriage?

Found this interesting story on another blog. I am not gonna defend or offend this thought but it's "Just another interesting thought" ....

One day, Plato asked his teacher, "What is love? How can I find it?" His teacher answered, "There is a vast wheat field in front. Walk forward without turning back, and pick only one stalk. If you find the most magnificent stalk, then you have found love."
Plato walked forward, and before long, he returned with empty hands, having picked nothing. His teacher asked, "Why did you not pick any stalk?" Plato answered, "Because I could only pick once, and yet I could not turn back. I did find the most magnificent stalk, but did not know if there were any better ones ahead, so I did not pick it. As I walked further, the stalks that I saw were not as good as the earlier one, so I did not pick any in the end. His teacher then said, "And that is love."

On another day, Plato asked his teacher, "What is marriage? How can I Find it?" His teacher answered, "There is a thriving forest in front. Walk forward without turning back, and chop down only one tree. If you find the tallest tree, then you have found marriage". Plato walked forward, and before long, he returned with a tree. The tree was not thriving, and it was not tall either. It was only an ordinary tree. His teacher asked, "Why did you chop down such an ordinary tree?" Plato answered, "Because of my previous experience. I had walked through the field, but returned with empty hands. This time, I saw this tree, and I felt that it was not bad, so I chopped it down and brought it back. I did not want to miss the opportunity." His teacher then said, "And that is marriage. You see son Love is the most beautiful thing to happen to a person, its an opportunity but you don't realise its worth when you have it but only when its gone like the field of stalks. Marriage like the tree you chopped , it's a compromise."

Altruism - the selfish gene :)

Another wonderful finding.. This is one of my favourite topics and would love to debate about.
A biological background to this nature of human beings can be found in a book called "The selfish Gene" by Dr.Richard Dawkins. I recommend it for anyone interested in this department. It's a book for a novice and assumes very less biology or chemistry.

Now.. Story time ..

A reporter once asked a farmer to divulge the secret behind his corn, which won the state fair contest year after year. The farmer confessed it was all because he shared his seed with his neighbors.

"Why do you share your best seed corn with your neighbors when you're entering the same contest each year as well?" asked the reporter.

"Why sir," said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grew inferior corn, cross-pollination would steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbor do the same."

And so it is with other situations in our lives. Those who want to be successful must help their neighbors, friends, relatives to be successful.

Those who choose to live well must help others live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.

This story exemplifies "altruism."

Altruism: Action that benefits another person, including self by comforting, helping, sharing, rescuing and cooperating. Acts of concern for other people

ஈகோ ...EGO !

அவன் ஒரு அரசன். 'தான்' என்ற அகங்காரம் நிரம்பியவன். வேட்டைக்குச்சென்ற போது ஒரு துறவியை சந்திக்க நேரிட்டது. கண் மூடித்தியானம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்தார் துறவி. " நான் பல நாடுகளை வென்றவன் அது இது என்றெலாம் தன்னைப் பற்றிக்கூறிய அரசன் எல்லம் தனக்கிருந்தும் தான் நிம்மதி இல்லாமல் இருப்பதாகக்கூறி தனக்கு எப்போது மகிழ்ச்சி கிடைக்கும் என வினாவினான்.



தியானம் கலைந்த்தால் கண்விழித்த துறவி சற்றே கோபமாக, " நான் செத்தால்தான் உனக்கு சந்தோஷம் கிடைக்கும்.." என்று சொல்லிவிட்ட்டு மீண்டும் கண்ணை மூடி தியானத்தில் ஆழ்ந்தார்.

"நான் எத்தனை பெரிய அரசன் என்னையே அவமானப் படுத்துகிறாயா..?" என்றபடி கொஞ்சமும் சிந்திக்காமல் துறவியைக் கொல்வதற்காக கத்தியை உருவினான் அரசன். " அட மூடனே நான் என்றால், என்னைச் சொல்லவில்லை.. 'நான்' என்ற இறுமாப்பு செத்தால்தான் உனக்கு சந்தோஷம் கிடைக்கும் .." என்று விளக்கினார் துறவி.



Edging God Out என்பதன் சுருக்கம் தான் EGO! அதாவது நம்மை விட்டு ஆனந்தம் அதாவது ஆண்டவன் வெளியேறும் நிலைதான் ஈகோ.

தன் மீது

மண் வீழ்ந்து மூடிவிட்ட போதிலும் - விதை

தான் புதைக்கப்பட்டதாக எண்ணுவதில்லை.

அது விதைக்கப்பட்டதாகவே நினைக்கிறது. - அதனால் தான்

அது மீண்டும் வீரியத்துடன் முளைக்கிறது.

இலட்சியம் ...

இன்றைய இளைஞனே!



உனது பயணம் எதை நோக்கி என்று உன் பிம்பத்தை நீ கேட்டதுண்டா?



பிறப்பது நம் கையிலில்லை; இறப்பதும் நம் கையிலில்லை; வாழ்வதற்கு மட்டும் நாம் யார் என்ற வறட்டு வேதாந்தத்தின் மீது வாள் வீசு.



தன்னம்பிக்கையைச் சுட்டெரிக்கும் இலக்கியங்களையும் ஏற்பாடுகளையும் இடறிவிடு!



மரணம் மெய் என்பது எவ்வளவு பெரிய உண்மையோ - வாழ்வு பொய் என்பதும் அவ்வளவு பெரிய பொய்யே. வாழ்க்கையின் ஒவ்வொரு நிமிஷமும் உண்மையானது.



அந்த நிமிஷங்கள்் இலட்சியங்களால் மட்டுமே கொளரவிக்கப்படுகின்றன. காலம் இறந்து விடுகிறது ஆனால் அது மனிதனின் செயல்களால் வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது.



இன்று உனது இலட்சியம் என்ன? காற்றின் போக்கில் ப்றக்கும் காகிதமாய் நம்மில் பலருக்கு இலக்கு என்பது தீர்மானமாகாமலேயே இருக்கிறது.



உனது இலட்சியம் என்று நீ கோடு கிழித்துக்கூறுவது எதை?

மருத்துவராவது, பொறியியலாளராவது, ஆசிரியராவது எழுதுதாளராவது இவை போன்ற ஆசைகளுக்கெல்லாம் நீ இலட்சியங்கள் என்று நாமகரணம் சூட்டிக்கொள்ளக்கூடாது.

A programmer from a very large computer company went to a software conference and then returned to report to his manager, saying: ``What sort of programmers work for other companies? They behaved badly and were unconcerned with appearances. There hair was long and unkempt and their clothes were wrinkled and old. They crashed our hospitality suite and they made rude noises during my presentation.''

The manager said: ``I should have never sent you to the conference. Those programmers live beyond the physical world. They consider life absurd, an accidental coincidence. It's a distributed computing platform that can manage web-scale datasets on 100,000 node server clusters. It includes a petabyte, distributed, fault tolerant filesystem, distributed RPC code, probably network shared memory and process migration. And a datacenter management system which lets a handful of ops engineers effectively run 100,000 servers. Any of these projects could be the sole focus of a startup.

(1) EVERYBODY DOESN'T HAVE TO LOVE. Not everyone has to love me or even like me.I don't necessarily like everybody I know, so why should I expect everyone else to like me?I enjoy being liked or loved but if someone doesn't like me I will still be okay because he/she will be the loser by not being in my company.I cant make somebody like me, anymore than someone can get me to like them.I don't need approval all the time.If someone does not approve of me I will still be okay because I can handle criticism.

(2) ITS OKAY TO MAKE MISTAKES. Making mistakes is something we all do,and I am still a fine and worthwhile person when I make them.There is no reason for me to get upset when I make a mistake.I am trying and if I make mistakes I will continue trying.The important thing is to learn from them.Even if I don't learn from them and make that mistake again atleast I will be better off than some cowards who are to afraid to face their mistakes and run away. Other people are okay too if they make mistakes I can accept mistakes that others make as well as mine.

(3)OTHER PEOPLE ARE OKAY AND I AM OKAY. People who do the things which I don't like are not necessarily bad people.They shouldn't be necessarily punished just because I don't like what they do or did .There is no reason why somebody should be the way I want them to be they have their own identity and there is no reason why I should be the way some body else wants me to be even I have my own identity.People will be what they want to be and I will be what I want to be.I cant control other people or change them neither can they.We are who we are and we all deserve basic respect.

(4)I DON'T HAVE TO CONTROL THINGS. I will survive if things are different than what I want them to be.I can accept things the way they are and accept ,myself the way I am and accept other people the way they are.There is no reason for me to get upset if I cant change things to fit my idea.There is no reason why I should like everything.Even if I don't like it I can live with it.

(5)I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY DAY. I am responsible for what I do and how I feel.Nobody can make me feel anything.If I have a rotten day I am the one who allowed it to be that way.If I had a great day I am the one who deserves credit for thinking positive.Its not the responsibility of other people to change so that I can feel better.I am the one who is incharge of my life.

(6) I CAN HANDLE IT WHEN THINGS GO WRONG. I don't need to watch out for things to go wrong.Things usually just go fine and when they don't I can handle it.I don't have to waste my energy worrying.The sky wont fall in;things will be okay.

(7)ITS IMPORTANT TO TRY. I can.Even though I am faced with very difficult tasks it is better to face them than to avoid them.Avoiding a task does not give me any opportunities for success or joy,but trying does.Things worth having are worth the effort.I might not be able to do everthing but atleast I will do something.

(8)I AM CAPABLE. I don't need someone else to take care of my problems.I am capable.I can take care of myself and make decisions on my own.I can think for myself.

(9)I CAN CHANGE. I don't have to be a certain way because of what has happened in the past.Everyday is a new day.Its silly to think I cant help being the way I am.Ofcourse I can,yes I can change but not for somebody else because I want to change and I think I will be a better person than what I am.

(10)OTHER PEOPLE ARE CAPABLE TOO. I cant solve other people's problems for them.I don't have to take on other people's problems as if they were my own.They are capable and can take care of themselves and can solve their own problems.I can care and be of help to some but I cant do everything for them. They most helpful thing that I can do for them is to make them realize that they are capable and can do it they don't need my help they are self reliant.

(11)I CAN BE FLEXIBLE. There is more than one way to do something.More than one person has good good ideas .There is no one and only best way.Everyone has ideas that are worthwhile.Some may make more sense to me than to someone else but everyone has some worthwhile ideas and everyone has something worthwhile to contribute

It seems like Google, the becoming arch rival to Microsoft, is doing a full blown recruitment. No wonder the big names are behind after it made its IPO. Sun lost an expert...

I was shocked to know that Josh Bloch, the author of record breaking book "Effective Java", A java genius,  is no more with SUN. TSS  has the news..
 Yes... He seems to have accepted a position at Google. This may be good news for other programming communities as well as the whole developer community as he gets freedom for his inclination in general but defintely a loss for java the community. Hope he continues to love the language he worked in the past and help it see more success.

Font Wars coming to an end ?! (tamil)

It's been so long since tamil language was brought into the computer arena. But the main obstacles were to display tamil font over the internet. Many thanks to Unicode. Now tamil can be used in google search too. I was very impressed with some of the findings on the net on making tamil move more towards Unicode. Especially I was amazed with the work that has gone in making tamil blogs ! My very first entry into a Unicode based tamil page was www.ezilnila.com SIMPLY WONDERFUL!! Following some of the links took me to tamil blogs!!
Wow. It's all Unicode. There are a couple of tools that are useful when it comes to Unicode tamil stuff. The one that I use and my all time favorite free sw is e-Kalappai by default it does not come with Unicode support but there is a plug-in to be installed to enable Unicode. All this is require if you wanna put your work on Unicode. But just to read those pages off the net you need NOTHING. All you need is a quite latest browser.
But if you want to Google with tamil just turn the e-Kalappai Unicode version on and type in the google search bar any tamil word by typing the pronunciation of the word. For example "thisaihal" . The characters might look funny on your screen sometimes but they make good sense to google engine. Hit Go and see the results.. You will be amazed indeed.

Accidentally bumped into this webcast on Zdnet. A wonderful discussion ...in 15 min to wrap about offshore pros and cons with some top folks in the industry.

As everyone knows offshore development is gonna have a big impact on software industry and i believe it already had. It was interseting to note that some of the presenters mentioning that "India and China are not cheap anymore" and another one saying the time when we used to think that only the low quality cheap work is what drained out to offshore development is gone and now more than money ... talent, innovation and work ethics is what's attracting them.This is good news for all the tech geeks out there in the developing countires. Now their talent and skills are being appreciated. but bad news for people entering the job market here in North America and also in Europe. Another intersting fact was that before starting offshore work every company must have their own acts well set in terms of work process to the level best. Otherwise it's all gonna end up in a disaster. Sounds very true

New Movie(Tamil)

Aayutha Eluththu (Tamil) rel: May-2004

Stars: Madhavan,Meera Jasmine, Surya, Siddharth,Trisha

Music : A.R. Rahman ; Lyrics : Vairamuthu ; Direction : Mani Ratnam.

I saw this movie twice and as you could guess this is another Mani ratnam HIT. I enjoyed every moment of this movie , especially the editing and how the story is organized. Mani has done wonderful job. Typical "Mani Style" scenes such as night light shootings, his own style of dialogs with short but strong sentences are all over the movie.

The movie is about 3 youngster's life styles and how they come to a interfere with each others by an accident on one of the main bridges in Chennai. Every artist in the movie have performed well. Special note should be given to Madhavan for taking up an anti-hero role. As a typical chennai gangster his acting is fantastic. Meera Jasmine looks exactly like the "Azhaki" movie Nandita Das. wow what a combination. Surya , Siddharth and Trisha have doen their roles nicely too.

For all ARR music fans...here is another addition to you hit list. Even thougth there has been some recent critiques about ARR's music quality with his master , mentor Mani .. ARR has done a wonderful job in this movie. The music selection for the 3 heros and the theme music for their scenes on the movie are awesome. I always liked the hummings that appear in his movies and AE has some too. Special ones are the "Jeevane.." one that plays behind when madhavan appears and the humming in between the 'saranam' and 'pallavi' in the "hey good bye nanba...." song. The mixing of fast and slow beats in all the songs proves to the ARR critiques why he is such a star.

screenplay, choreography and arts all gives an extra kick to movie. The sync sound technique is a plus with DTS quality sound.

overall I would give 4/5 rating for this movie.

No.. this is not because I am a Mani ratnam fan :o)

Why a polynomial algorithm is better than exponential algorithm?

a polynomial algorithm is an algorithm if the complexity function of this algorithm has a rate of growth O(n^k). otherwise it's an exponential algorithm. From a basic mathematical point of view we know why a polynomial algorithm is prefered from an exponential one is pretty simple. When the size of the problem, that is, it's input size grows larger the running time of the exponential algorithm grows way too faster than the polynomial algorithm. This is a very basic observation. But there is also another important property in this comparison that does not get noticed very often. That is when the machine power increases for some reason the limit of the size of the problem that the exponential algorithm can solve increases by a smaller factor (ex: PrevSize+10) where as the exponential algorithm's limit of the size of the problem grows by multiple factors (ex: PrevSize x 10 ). This makes a huge impact and deserves mentioning in this fast growing hardware world.

Lost with Use cases ?!@#$%

Use cases are a wonderful idea that has been vastly overcomplicated. Over and over again I have seen teams sitting and spinning in their attempts to write use cass. Typically they thrash on issues of form rather than substance. They argue and debate over preconditions, postconditions, actors, secondary actors, and a bevy of other things that just don't matter. The real trick to use cases is to keep them simple. Don't worry about use case forms, just write them on blank paper, or on a blank page in a simple word processor, or on blank index cards. Don't worry about filling in all the details. Details aren't important until much later. Don't worry about capturing all the use cases; that's an impossible task. The one thing to remember about use cases is: tomorrow they are going to change. No matter how diligently you capture them, no matter how fastidiously you record the details, no matter how thoroughly you think them through, no matter how much effort you apply to exploring and analyzing the requirements, tomorrow they are going to change. If something is going to change tomorrow, you don't really need to capture its details today. Indeed, you want to postpone the capture of the details until the very last possible moment. Think of use cases as just in time requirements.

Accidental vs Essential Complexity

If you have not heard of this before here is a neat way to look at it....

say that you want to find the biggest number in an array. To do that first you decide to sort the array and then do the finding. Assuming the running time of the algorithm is your complexity your algorithm has O(n^2) complexity. Then some one comes up and say I can do it in O(nlogn) time. Well , in that case you have introduced some complexity in to your algorithm than this one and hence that's an accidental complexity. After thinking for while you decide..Wait a minute I can do it in O(n) time by simply comparing each number and remembering the highest! So now the nlogn becomes an accidental complexity. Now if someone comes to you saying they can do it in O(logn) then you know it's not true. coz that means their algorithm will find the biggest by not looking at every number which is not possible. So now you conclude that O(n) is the Essential complexity of the problem. Sounds good?

Where does this idea come from? In his famous paper Fred.Brooks brings up this notion of software systems having their essential and accidental complexities in the search of a silver bullet for software engineering problems. In summary, Accidental complexity is something that we bring on ourselves into the problem and Essential complexity is something inherent to the problem itself.
